Stella Peterson is a Meanjin/Brisbane-based multidisciplinary performing artist, exploring life’s idiosyncrasies through character and play.
With a strong affinity for physical clowning and stage combat, Stella has recently showcased a wide range of skills in emerging works including Backbone Theatre Festival’s “HORSE PLAY” and La Boite’s ASSEMBLY Program. She has also performed in well-loved literary adaptations of Shakespeare (Macbeth, Romeo & Juliet), Roald Dahl (The Twits), and George Orwell (Animal Farm) while touring with Shake & Stir Theatre Co. across Queensland and New South Wales.
Alongside further film, voice, and theatre credits, Stella has demonstrated versatility across multiple performance-making roles in writing, producing, and directing her own projects. These include Celebrate All (Queensland Theatre, Undercover Festival), Almost, Maine (Anywhere Theatre Festival), and Women in Voice (QPAC Playhouse).

“This is an assured staging of a notoriously difficult play. The opening rehearsal atmosphere establishes a playful theatrical world, especially through the crisp comic work of Stella Peterson as an enthusiastic Stage Director, balancing authority and bemusement, but once the intruding Characters arrive, things sharpen considerably. Indeed, the contrast between the casual physicality of the theatre company and the heightened presence of the titular Characters is one of the work’s most effective visual impacts.”

The wider acting troupe, including Jules Berry, Nathan Turner, Frankie Kershaw, Yianni Sines, Carmen O’Connell, Stella Peterson, Alex Flew, Cherie McCaffery, Brock O’Rourke, Grace Swadling, and Liam Olsen, create the necessary contrast between theatrical artifice and lived drama. Their disbelief, ridicule, and gradual absorption into the story help frame the central conflict of the play. The actors within the play watch, judge, imitate, and attempt to reproduce what the Characters insist can never truly be reproduced.

‘Stella Peterson is an effective Pony, competently canvassing a complex character’s duplicity and idealism. I consider Peterson also shows their best work during comedic scenes; They briefly branch into a different character, satirizing the middle-class’s indifference to climate catastrophe to hilarious perfection.’
