“There is a clear assurance to the direction and staging of the company’s largest cast of 23 performers. Movement of the sizeable ensemble is handled with care; blocking is purposeful and varied, making strong use of levels, clustered groupings and shifting focus so that the stage picture remains dynamic even when the text is wrestling with abstract ideas. In particular, Jonty Hansen’s move about the space as the play-within-a-play’s director is considered as he restlessly crouches in the stalls’ aisle, perches in seats and on armrests gesturing, mumbling and taking notes in reaction to what he is seeing, serving almost as an audience surrogate in his impatience, disbelief, frustration and scepticism.”

“The Director, played by Jonty Hansen, reacts with the exact kind of “what on earth is happening here?” energy I imagine most directors would have if six randoms waltzed into a closed rehearsal and demanded stage time. Hansen brings a wonderfully sassy impatience to the role, giving the Director both comic bite and mounting frustration. That practical exasperation gives the audience something to hold onto. As the Director tries to make sense of the Characters’ demands, Hansen becomes a necessary anchor, balancing disbelief, ego, curiosity, and irritation. His line, “This is all just talk,” landed particularly well, partly because by that point, yes, it very much was.”

Leading the theatre troupe is Jonty Hansen as the Director – with a spot-on interpretation of that hard-nosed creature! Perhaps he was offered clues by his fellow cast members, or Pirandello’s theatrical in-jokes fuelled his very witty performance.
