Oscar Lowe
Music Director
Long Gone Lonesome Cowgirls is Oscar's second production with Ad Astra, following Hotel Sorrento, in which he composed/improvised the show's score and performed it as the first live musician to perform in Pluto. For just 18 years old, he's been busy: performing alongside Australian Idol contestants, heavy metal bands at the Triffid, singing with an 80+ strong orchestral group in New Zealand, and everything in between. Oscar is currently studying a Diploma of Musical Theatre at Queensland College of Dance, where he'll be AMD for Sweet Charity when it goes on later this year. He hopes you enjoy the show and is ecstatic to be an honorary Cowgirl.

The band, led by Oscar Lowe on piano as assistant musical director, sounds fantastic. Plus, Oscar gets a few chances to shine vocally, which is great to see.

The musical aspect never feels out of place. The playwright cleverly uses the songs of Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Hank Williams and other C&W greats to tell Vicki’s and Rae’s stories of dreams and heartbreak. It just works. And the bonus in this production is a live on-stage band for the duration of the play – with experienced performer Meg Kiddle (Queens of Song) at the helm as Music Director), featuring Oscar Lowe on keys (who has styled himself as a kind of Elvis Perkins in the shadows for some prologue and coda vocals too), Chris Tone on drums and Nathan Cho on guitar. This band is great and add extra verve to make this production really special.

Music is part of the fabric of the production. Beyond Vickie and Rae’s passion for singing country and western songs, it represents their characters’ resilience, longing and gradual self-revelation. An accomplished three-piece band (Nathan Cho on guitar, Oscar Lowe on keys and Chris Tone on drums, under Meg Kiddle’s musical direction) brings the soundtrack of Hank Williams, Patsy Cline and Loretta Lynn-like country classics to life, even making occasional appearances as patrons of the hotel at which the vivacious Rae barmaids.
