Carmen O’Connell

Actor

Carmen has always loved theatre, throughout her schooling she always looked for any opportunity to perform on stage. After graduating high school, she completed a Diploma of Acting for Film from the New York Film Academy Australia. Since then, she has performed in a wide array of local theatre productions.

  • Carmen O’Connell was only four years old when she first discovered her love for performing. The Galaxy Theatre holds a special place in her heart as she used to spend every school holiday watching performances there as a child, dreaming of one day being able to perform herself. ‘Six Characters in Search of an Author’ marks her first appearance on the Ad Astra stage and she couldn’t be more excited.

Having spent the first seventeen years of her life focusing heavily on theatre, Carmen looked to develop her film acting abilities. At the beginning of last year, Carmen received a Diploma of Screen and Media (Acting for Film) from the New York Film Academy Australia. As well as this, in July last year she completed an Acting Residency at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts.

Her most recent theatrical credits include ‘Almost, Maine’ with Villanova Players (Marvalyn/Deena, 2026), ‘Bin Night’ at PIP Theatre (Matilda, 2025), ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ with Villanova Players (Hippolyta/Fairy, 2025), ‘The Servant of Two Masters’ at Growl Theatre (Beatrice, 2025), and ‘Lord of the Flies’ with the Gold Coast Little Theatre (Robert, 2024).

  • The ensemble members tasked with inhabiting the rehearsal room bring a responsiveness that is integral to the work’s impact, which is no easy feat given that they are mostly tasked with observation and reaction more than action.

The wider acting troupe, including Jules Berry, Nathan Turner, Frankie Kershaw, Yianni Sines, Carmen O’Connell, Stella Peterson, Alex Flew, Cherie McCaffery, Brock O’Rourke, Grace Swadling, and Liam Olsen, create the necessary contrast between theatrical artifice and lived drama. Their disbelief, ridicule, and gradual absorption into the story help frame the central conflict of the play. The actors within the play watch, judge, imitate, and attempt to reproduce what the Characters insist can never truly be reproduced.
