“Prue Robb’s direction keeps the story moving well, with clear affection for these women and their world. The pacing lets the emotional shifts hit home without turning the whole thing into a misery rodeo.”

Director (and Set Designer) Prue Robb (Assistant Director for Ad Astra’s recent productions of Frankie and Johnny, and Hotel Sorento) has assembled a sterling team – with two superb leading ladies who work brilliantly together, layering drama and music to tell the story of the two ‘cowgirls’ – Vicki and Rae.

Robb’s stage design turns Ad Astra’s black box theatre into an authentic slice of regional ‘60s life courtesy of the religious iconography and kitschy details of Vickie’s house (props by Wilson Kong). Its domestic familiarity gives the production an immediate sense of time and place, while the carefully chosen household details speak to Vickie’s desire for respectability but also romantic escape. And then there is the glorious reveal of her secret-self wardrobe of cowgirl outfits and US memorabilia, which is brilliantly realised, not only as a visual surprise but as an important insight into the fantasy life Vickie has kept hidden from those around her.
