“The ensemble members tasked with inhabiting the rehearsal room bring a responsiveness that is integral to the work’s impact, which is no easy feat given that they are mostly tasked with observation and reaction more than action. Even so, there are some welcome moments of humour such as when The Leading Actress (Jules Berry) overplays her portrayal of the Step-Daughter in underscore of the play’s satire of theatrical conventions.”

The wider acting troupe, including Jules Berry, Nathan Turner, Frankie Kershaw, Yianni Sines, Carmen O’Connell, Stella Peterson, Alex Flew, Cherie McCaffery, Brock O’Rourke, Grace Swadling, and Liam Olsen, create the necessary contrast between theatrical artifice and lived drama. Their disbelief, ridicule, and gradual absorption into the story help frame the central conflict of the play. The actors within the play watch, judge, imitate, and attempt to reproduce what the Characters insist can never truly be reproduced.

There are fabulous takes on the work of actors by Jules Berry as the Leading Actress and Nathan Turner as the Leading Actor. These experienced players create laugh-out-loud moments without ever skewering their subjects.

Jules Berry as Magistrate Hesther Salomon appears effortless. They manage to find this perfect balance between showing the power and responsibility that comes with a job that has seen countless evils and yet manages to maintain their humanity and empathy – and to truly want this young man to find peace.

York Lit (Jules Berry) as Romeo was another comedic highlight, as they fully leaned into the strong Aussie accent and puffed-up bravado. Their performance of Never Tear Us Apart while serenading Biron as Juliet was so earnestly funny it hurt. Not to mention York’s bedazzled beard was an absolute serve.
