ISABEL KRUSE (she/her/they/them) is a passionate, dedicated multihyphenate (actress/singer/director/producer) with over a decade representing Australia on the international stage and 143 stage credits to date. Some of their most cherished highlights include clowning with Patch Adams in Ecuador, performing on the West End stage and training in Shakespeare with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, development of their headlining guest entertainer productions 'Operaerial' and 'My Favourite Sings: A Celebration of All Things Broadway'. Most recent stage credits include Cinderella ('Into the Woods'), Doralee Rhodes ('9 to 5!'), Diana Goodman ('next to normal'), Mother Superior ('Sister Act'), and Beverly/Annette in 'Come From Away'. Most notable Brisbane-based producing and performance accolades include a 2021 Matilda nomination for Best Independent Production and Best Emerging Artist win for Pierce Gordon in 'Against the Wall' by Justy Kosek, which was cast, produced by, and featured Isabel in the powerhouse role of Dianne, 2016 selection to the TEDx Broadway Young Professionals ambassador program, and representing Australia in the 2012 World Championships of Performing Arts (awarded World Champion - Acting; Division Champion - Operatic Voice; Industry Award; Gold/Silver medal placements in Contemporary, Jazz and Pop Voice). She's got a voice that could send a beer flying off a pub table and a gritty confidence that makes the line “You sayin’ I’m not f*ckin’ refined?” land exactly as it should. You will simply fall in love with both these performers. Cheney is back into singing after a break to work in drama and some Shakespeare; and Isabel has been working in the US in multiple mainstage commercial musicals, happy to be back on home ground in a home-grown play. Together they are a powerhouse – in conflict and friendship – and create a perfect balance of realistic drama, with heightened and heartfelt tunes – a blend that one audience member described as “very refreshing” in the cast Q&A after the show. But these performers can do comedy too – and there are some great comic lines. These cowgirls feel true to the 1960s setting, enhanced by some wonderful costumes (by Erin Lowry), props (Wilson Kong), and a little bit of choreography too (Erin Lowry and Oscar Lowe).

Much of the production’s charm comes from the ease with which Hossack and Kruse allow Vickie and Rae’s unlikely friendship to find its way from wary opposition to genuine affection. Kruse is vibrant as popular barmaid Rae, whose fun-loving exterior hides her vulnerabilities, making it easy to appreciate her character becoming the toast of the town. Her warmth and unguarded energy provide a strong counterpoint to Vickie’s reserve, but Kruse also ensures Rae is never reduced to mere bravado. In their shared scenes, the pleasure is in watching the pair’s comic contrasts gradually soften into something more honest, as the friendship deepens without losing its spark.
