Reviews

The entirety of the cast worked so well as a cohesive collective, it is difficult to describe their performances individually. Each were committed to their character, which had clearly been researched and developed into well-rounded and thought out personalities, and interacted with one another with the familiarity one would expect from members of a sports team. Each brought a powerful intensity, light and shade and above all, energy, to their performance. Each actor was faultless in their execution of dialogue and blocking contributing to the overall professionalism of the show.

Malika Savory’s naivety and quiet confidence shone through in her character.

“#2 Malika Savory is shy at first, possibly concealing a personal crisis, but in full voice by the end”

Beth Keehn - Stage Whispers | Read Full Review Here

'Malika Savory played the New One and others with naivety and tenderness. Her transitions into other characters were obvious and each character she played was distinct from one another. Savory imbued her performances with a haunting and ethereal quality which was quite mesmerising to watch.’

'A standout, however, comes from Savory as 8-year-old New One, being consoled by 11- year-old Old One (Shahnee Hunter). Not only does she bring a visceral palpability to her terror as New One hides under her blankets, but she easily switches into her other roles as 1850s Scottish girl Lizzie and 1940s Yorkshire lad Tom, complete with excellent accent work in add to the historical aspect, and realisation of the use of physical aspects to transform characters in front of the audience, Brechtian style.’

'Malika Savory showed her versatility in the multiple roles of the young one, Tom and Lizzie. She particularly shone as the young one, new to the orphanage who is bullied and shamed as she struggles to adjust to the rules of her harsh environment, bringing a vulnerability and fragility to the role which helped to highlight the lack of compassion these children endured.'

‘Malika Savory’s nuanced execution of Sara brings the fragility of this vulnerable girl to life...her scenes with Mrs. Appleyard deliver a masterclass in powerful performance.’

Jennifer James, Dark Stories Theatre | Read Full Review

‘Savory is especially adept at using physicality to determine her glimpse into different characters, especially in the pouty stomach-out stance of winy youngster Edith and the contrasting defiance of artistic young orphan Sara in confrontation with the College’s founder and headmistress Mrs Appleyard about her legal guardian’s fall behind on school fee payments. Her performance is absorbing throughout.’

‘All four of the performers worked really well together, and each made memorable contributions to the show—from Graham’s joy at the rain, through to Mossman’s words and movements. Roberts was an equally compelling central performer, but it was Savory’s anticipation and reaction to the immersion in the water that will stay with me for a long time.’
