John Caswell

John Caswell

Actor, Writer, Director

John Caswell is a 24 year old Brisbane-based actor, director and writer with eight years of acting experience. John graduated from QUT with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2017.

Biography

John began a Bachelor of Fine Arts at QUT in 2015, and has been acting, directing, and writing for theatre and film since. In his final year at QUT he discovered his enjoyment in creating and performing in works of interactive, immersive, and non-traditional theatre. This resulted in both his capstone performance The Things we Lost, and its spiritual successor Signed and Sealed both containing elements of immersive theatre. This would influence Ad Astra’s 2018 performance of X-Stacy, when John proposed the set be designed in such a way that the audience is positioned in the centre of the action. After his emotional performance as X-Stacy’s “Ben”, John would go on to write and direct The Things We Do Behind the Scenes in 2019- making its debut as both Ad Astra’s first original play, as well as it’s first to utilise film as a storytelling medium.

This foray into film would push him to create short films with Puddleduck Pictures, a company founded by fellow Ad Astra actor Louella Baldwin. These films included the likes of The Intern and Three’s a Crowd- a film adaption of an earlier play written in 2018 for Brisbane’s Short & Sweet Festival.

In 2021 John performed in Short & Sweet Festival again- this time beside fellow Ad Astra creatives Lara Rix and Ashleigh Creeks, performing as Father Murphy in the comical Accountant from Hell. John and Lara would then join Ad Astra creative Willem Whitfield acting in [The Honeypot], an original, fully immersive, and largely improvisational play, bringing John back to his roots with his love for immersive theatre.

Currently, John is writing his next play, and waiting for his next audition.
